Alders are large trees that will thrive on and improve poor soil. Their roots quickly bind loose or rocky earth and they also grow in waterlogged conditions. They do need a sunny location. Alders grow to 20-30 metres tall.
Common Alder and Italian Alder are the largest members of the family; Italian Alder is also suitable for rough, country style hedges. Red Alder can get pretty big too, while Golden Alder is more slender and stands out with its bright yellow-green leaves. Grey Alder is very vigorous and can get quite tall, although it tends to produce a thicket of suckering stems around it (these are great for wildlife) and so put on less height.

Planting Alders as companion trees to restore soil fertility:
For forestry projects or a stand of trees in a garden or park, Alder can be inter-planted with slower growing trees to add nitrogen to the soil. After 50-100 years, the Alders can be cut down. They will regrow from their stumps and slowly die back as the other trees take over and shade out the Alder. This technique is used to reclaim
degraded sites, along with the use of Mycorrhizal "Rootgrow" Fungi at planting time.
Caution about Alder Roots:
Alder has very fibrous and strong roots, which are great for stabilising loose soil or rocky slopes. However, only plant Alder a good distance (40 metres is safe) away from drains, water pipes & foundations of old walls or old houses.
Alders are good to plant beside water, especially streams, but don't use them to surround a small small lake or unlined pond. Alders are nitrogen fixing trees, with root nodules that are full of a bacteria called Frankiella alni that produce water soluble Nitrogen compounds. These enrich the soil, but if they build up in a small body of water, they cause the vigorous growth of algae weeds that choke out other plants and fish.
Trees have arrived safely and have been planted. Great service, great quality trees, I would highly recommend you to friends.
