We love Amelanchier lamarkii. Also known as Snowy Mespilus, Amelanchier lamarkii has pretty much everything that you could want in a tree. This is a fantastic plant with something good to look at almost all of the year round. It is a large shrub or small tree with masses of white flowers in spring followed by red/black edible fruit in summer and in the Autumn the foliage turns a brilliant orange-red colour. Amelanchier lamarkii (sometimes confused with Amelanchier canadensis) can be grown as part of an informal hedge, in a shrub border or as a well behaved small specimen tree.
The text books say that Amelanchier lamarkii needs a rich moist soil, and it certainly loves good growing conditions, but we have a Snowy Mespilus at home that grows in dry, poor soil and does very well thank you...
