Which size Apple Tree Should I Buy?If you need a crop as soon as possible, a half standard is already well on its way to becoming an adult tree. For safe and easy harvesting, a cordon apple tree is short and trained on a wire. A bush shaped tree is in the middle, with a short trunk that will keep its height down to about 3 metres. A new, sapling tree is called a maiden and can be trained into anything you desire.

Facts About Apple Trees - Malus Domestica
Britain has a near perfect climate for
growing apple trees and you don't need many to keep a family in apples from about September through to the new year. If you store them carefully and preserve the excess fruit as chutney, jam or apple butter, you could have homemade apple produce all year round. Some of the most delicious apple varieties bruise easily and so are rarely seen in the shops, which is all the more reason to plant your own trees. Apple trees are in their harvesting prime for about 40 years; the amount of fruit they produce in that time depends on the breed and where they are planted, but 10,000 apples is reasonable ballpark figure. If you buy a half standard, that works out at about a penny for every four fresh, organic apples produced in your own garden.
There is no natural distinction between a cooking apple and an eating apple - it is really a matter of tradition, personal taste and culinary practicality. Our definitons are therefore guidelines and if your experience of a particular variety of apple contradicts the label we have given it, please do let us know so that we can investigate and improve our catalogue.
Apple trees all benefit from well drained, fertile soil and a sunny spot that does not form a frost pocket.
Rootstocks: All apple trees (edible ones, at least) are propagated by grafting cuttings from adult trees onto a rootstock from another apple tree, when they are both very small. The type of rootstock used controls their growth. Unless stated otherwise, we use MM106 rootstocks for our apple trees because they give you the choice of training your tree into many forms, such as fans, espaliers, cordons etc. Left to grow freely, plants will not grow more than 5 metres high and you can easily keep your apple trees smaller than that if you have limited space. These rootstocks were bred exclusively for the conditions here in Britain and they have the extra merit of being drought resistant once they are well established. Some of the most vigorous trees are grown on the more restrictive M9 rootstocks when sold as cordons.
