Ash Trees - Large Standards - Delivered by Mail Order from the Nursery with a 1 Year Guarantee

Common Ash, Fraxinus excelsior, is large native tree with sturdy upright branches. It will grow on most sunny sites with moist soil.
Ash trees can reach a height of about 30 metres.
Standard trees are the largest size that we deliver; you can also buy younger Ash plants here.

How Standard Trees are Measured:
All the plants in the ornamental trees section are graded as standards, which means that they are measured by their girth in centimetres 1 metre above ground level (basically, their trunk's waist measurement). They aren't measured by their height, which will vary. So, a 6/8 standard has a trunk with a circumference of 6-8 centimetres and an 8/10 standard has a trunk 8-10 centimetres around. This measurement makes no difference to the tree's final height.
Standard trees are 2 - 3.5 metres tall (on average) when they arrive; they are the most mature trees that you can buy from us. We cannot tell you precisely how tall your trees will be before we deliver them.

General description of Ash trees:
Ash is a big, tough, hardy tree that needs plenty of sun and prefers moist soils. It grows vigorously. The green leaves are pinnate and turn a mellow gold colour in Autumn. The small, frilly wind-pollinated flowers appear in winter, well before the leaves, but they aren't very noticeable. These mature into winged seeds, which can remain on the branches through winter. Ash is easily identified in winter by the smooth grey bark of its twigs, which are studded with black leaf buds.

History & uses of Fraxinus excelsior:
Ash was one of the most important timber trees in the past. It coppices very well and makes excellent firewood that burns well when it is still "green", without any seasoning. The timber is very hard and strong, although it isn't damp resistant, so was used for indoor furniture, roof beams and so on. Ash is slightly unusual in that it doesn't have a fixed gender - trees can change their flowers from male to female or produce both sexes in a single year.
