Green Beech - Fagus sylvatica - Container Grown
Beech is probably our most beautiful native tree, and it also makes a stunning hedge, which retains its leaves through the winter until bud-burst, if it is lightly clipped in August or September. Beech grows on any well drained soil, including solid chalk, but it is not suitable for wet locations where Hornbeam is a better choice.
Do not allow your beech to dry out in the first year after planting - mulch well with old mushroom compost and soak the soil in times of drought. Beech is suitable for hedges 120cm - 4’ or bigger; there is one at Meikleour, Perthshire which is over 100 feet tall!
Plant in one row at 3 per metre or in two rows for a thicker hedge at 5 per metre
