Malus domestica Black Dabinett
Black Dabinett - also spelt Black Dabinette produces medium to large fruit with a fabulous deep purple complexion, sometimes crackled with a lustrous green. The tree itself is fairly vigorous, more so than the ordinary Dabinett, and is a regular heavy cropper. The Dabinetts are a mainstay of cider farmers, with a mellow bittersweet flavour of vintage quality, meaning that it can be used to make full-bodied cider without the need to be mixed with other apples. We especially recommend Black Dabinett if you are planning on only having one cider apple tree. It is noted for its resistance to apple scab disease. It hails from Kingsbury Episcopi in Somerset and is probably named after the man who bred it, although we have been unable to find hard evidence. The fruit ripen during November.
Pollination Partners for Black Dabinett
For fail-safe pollination, we always recommend using a crab apple treeone of these is sure to pollinate a whole orchard, no matter when your apple Trees- flower. Black Dabinett is a mid-season bloomer and so can be pollinated by most of the Trees- in the Apple Tree Pollination guide, but ideally one that is also in the mid-season category.
Black Dabinett Rootstocks
We use MM106 rootstocks as standard for all of our apple Trees. The MM group of rootstocks were created specifically for use in the UK and guarantee a healthily cropping tree in our weather and soil conditions. MM106 produces a medium sized tree at a rate that is practical for gardeners who wish to train it into a fan or espalier. For 2008, only maiden Trees- are available, we expect to have other sizes in stock next year.
