Filbert Hazel, Cob Hazel
The Filbert is a large, fast growing deciduous native shrub or small tree. Filbert Hazel trees - like their common cousins produce catkins in February that are good for bees. These are the true hazelnuts or Kentish cobnuts and autumn brings a delicious, wholesome harvest of rich nuts that are a staple food for many native species, including the doormouse and woodmice. How to Brut your Hazel Nut Trees
Brutting is a simple process carried out in August that encourages profuse flowering the following spring, which obviously means more nuts for you when autumn comes. Simply snap without actually breaking off every new shoot that was produced that year (choose a point that is about 6-7 leaves above where the new stem meets old wood), leaving the broken ends hanging. This prevents the tree trying to make a new shoot (which would be a waste of energy so late in the year) and allows more light into the tree, where it can be of use for the current year's harvest.
