Common Green Beech - Fagus sylvatica
The Green or Common Beech is a beautiful native tree that makes an excellent hedge. Its leaves are lush and green in summer, turning golden brown in autumn and hanging onto the branches through the winter.
These are pot-grown plants for summer delivery - they are otherwise the same as our bareroot green beech plants, which are cheaper and delivered in winter (Nov-March). You can browse all of our beech plants for sale here.
Planting a Common Beech Hedge
Beech grows on any well drained soil, including solid chalk, but it is not suitable for wet locations, where Hornbeam is a better choice.
Do not allow your beech to dry out in the first year after planting - mulch well with old mushroom compost and soak the soil in times of drought.
Beech is suitable for hedges 120cm - 4’ or bigger; there is one at Meikleour, Perthshire which is over 100 feet tall.
Spacing: Plant in one row at 3 per metre (33cms apart) or in two staggered rows for a thicker hedge at 5 per metre.
Caring for a Beech Hedge
Pruning your new beech hedge:
After planting your beech, just nip off an inch, 2-3cms, off the end of each stem. Read more about pruning your new beech hedge as it matures here.
Pruning your mature beech hedge:
Beech hedging needs to be trimmed in midsummer
if you want it to hold its autumn leaves. Read more about trimming mature beech hedges here.
