Elderflower Trees - Sambucus nigra

The Common Elderflower or Elderberry is small tree or large shrub with graceful fern-like leaves.
It produces white flowers and black berries, both of which are used in elderflower cordial and wine making.

Using Elder for a hedge:
Keep it out of mixed hedges.
It will push over the plants next to it and totally take over with time.

It can be planted in rows by itself as a vigorous, effective screening plant, but it will always have the look of a rough, country hedge.

Making Elderflower Cordial:
Homemade Elderflower Cordial is a fabulous soft drink, and easy to make. You can buy all the equipment you need to make Elderflower cordial here and feel free to use our own elderflower cordial recipe.

Growing Elderflower trees:
All Elder trees grow well on chalk and are happy in the worst soils. They love heavy clay and tolerate drought when they are mature.

On the farm next to our nursery, on top of a windy hill, there are several large Elderflower trees that are growing in the piled up rubble from a demolished cow shed.
