Cotoneaster franchetii is a lovely near-evergreen shrub, ideal for hedging. It has pale pink flowers in the spring, followed by masses of decorative orange berries in autumn. Its neat green foliage clips beautifully, so you can keep it looking tidy without any fuss.
Your plants will usually keep their leaves for most of the winter, but early snows or hard frost will cause them to drop their leaves. This is normal in harsh conditions and doesn't hurt the plants.
Bareroot plants are for winter delivery, pot-grown plants are there for you to buy during the rest of the year.
It can be planted in a mixed hedge with the Red Berried Cotoneaster Simsonii for a bit more colour.
Growing a Cotoneaster Hedge
Cotoneaster is happy in most soils, including chalk, and it doesn't mind a bit of shade. It likes a heavy clay soil, as long as it is not prone to waterlogging in winter. Trim your plants in winter, after the berries have fallen. For hedges to 2m.
Spacing: Plant at 3 per metre.
Cotoneast franchetii is a Chinese plant that was brought to Europe in 1895 by the French Abbot Souli.
