Field Maple Trees - Large Standards - Delivered by Mail Order from the Nursery with a 1 Year Guarantee

The Field Maple tree, Acer campestre is a hardy native plant that will grow almost anywhere, except on very acidic soil or on the coast. It is a vigorous tree that tolerates dappled shade cast by taller trees and it is useful for tall screening or as part of a windbreak., what garden is it recommended for, what it will tolerate and its growth habit.
Field Maple trees can reach a height of about 15-25 metres. It is rare for them them to grow to over 20 metres, but it is possible on fertile, sunny, sheltered sites.
Standard trees are the largest size that we deliver; you can also buy Field Maple hedge plants here.

How Standard Trees are Measured:
All the plants in the ornamental trees section are graded as standards, which means that they are measured by their girth in centimetres 1 metre above ground level (basically, their trunk's waist measurement). They aren't measured by their height, which will vary. So, a 6/8 standard has a trunk with a circumference of 6-8 centimetres and an 8/10 standard has a trunk 8-10 centimetres around. This measurement makes no difference to the tree's final height.
Standard trees are 2 - 3.5 metres tall (on average) when they arrive; they are the most mature trees that you can buy from us. We cannot tell you precisely how tall your trees will be before we deliver them.

General description of Field Maple trees:
Acer campestre is a round headed native tree with twiggy branches. The young wood has distinctive corky ridges running along its length, creating grooves for insects and spiders to lay eggs in. In spring, the bright green leaves appear at about the same time as the small, insignificant flowers, which are popular with bees. The mature leaves are deep green and then turn a pale, mellow orange-yellow in autumn. The seeds are winged "helicopters", called samara.

History & uses of Acer campestre
This is a great bonsai tree. Field maple wood polishes very well and used for small, high quality items like musical instrument parts. It is good firewood.
