Malus Liset / Malus Lisette
This tree is a must have if you are after a splash of warm colours in your garden - from deep purple to lipstick crimson, Malus Liset packs in a range of exciting tones that are sure to attract plenty of attention. The yearly display begins with the bright, strawberry red buds, which are slowly covered up by the young foliage in spring. The leaves start out in life stained a rich purple colour which becomes greener as they mature but never fully disappears, providing the ideal backdrop to the flowers. These are the stars of the show, with luminous red-pink petals that swarm all over the tree, second only to a cherry blossom in sheer weight of beautiful flowers - crab apples and cherries are considered to be in the same family and you can clearly see the resemblance with this tree. Even Liset's crabapples are a bit cherry like, being shiny, dark red fruit about 1.5 cms across. They finish off this tree's long season of interest, hanging on longer than the leaves and decorating the branches as winter closes in. Though this tree can reach about 9 metres, 6 metres a more average height and it has a dense, compact growth habit that doesn't require much pruning.
Malus Liset will thrive in just about any fertile soil that has decent drainage and heavy clay is fine, so long as it is not in a dip that holds water for long periods. They are quite shade tolerant, though you may lose out on the full splendour of the flowers if it is planted in a shady spot. Its flowers open early, so if you want to use it as a pollination partner for apple trees, we suggest using it with varieties in the Early or Mid season categories of the Apple Tree Pollination guide.
