Malus Royalty - Purple Crabapple
An excellent ornamental purple crabapple for the small garden, Royalty gives you rich colours from spring to autumn and is one of our all-time favourites. Its glossy, purplish foliage alone can make it the focal point of your garden and, unlike other crabs that have colourful young leaves, Malus Royalty keeps its pigment through the summer. The large flowers really benefit from this deeply toned background, their bright pink petals creating a very pleasing effect of layered, contrasting colour that no other crab apple can compare with. The leaves give a great show in autumn, turning scarlet before they fall, revealing the dark red-black fruits which continue to adorn the branches for several more weeks - all in all a simply beautiful tree. Royalty is noted for being happy in polluted sites and comes recommended for urban planting. It has a spreading, rounded habit and will grow to about 8 metres.
Crabapples can do well in just about any soil type, so long as it is fairly fertile and the drainage is decent. Ideal for smaller city gardens. If you don't plant Royalty in a sunny spot, it will grow just fine but the leaves will tend to lose their purple colour. As a pollination partner for normal apples, this tree is a match for any plant in the Early and Mid-season categories of the Apple Tree Pollination guide.
