Golden Elder - Bareroot Sapling Plants

The Golden Elder, Sambucus nigra 'Aurea', is probably the best native golden leaved shrub. Apart from the leaf colour, it's the same as the common elder and it also makes elderflower cordial. It will grow anywhere that isn't a swamp! It works brilliantly at the back of a border, on the edge of woodland or as part of a windbreak.

Growing Golden Elder
Elder is happy in any conditions. It may not thrive in constantly wet places, but we've got a healthy row of elders growing in an old ditch near us that is pretty waterlogged all winter.
These vigorous plants make a dense thicket of stems, so in a way they are excellent hedge plants, as long as you don't want anything neat or elegant. They are best thought of as rough screening, rather than an informal hedge.
Do not plant them in a mixed hedge (unless the other plants are common elder).
You can prune them as roughly as you like, they are pretty much invincible.
Hedge Spacing: 1-2 plants per metre.
Your plants will grow up to about 4 metres in most places, although they tend to a bit shorter in exposed locations.
