Gorse, Ulex europaeus is ideal for rough barrier hedging and low screening on sandy, well drained soils. This spiny native bush is good for wildlife, especially butterflies and small nesting birds. It fixes nitrogen from the atmosphere into the soil, so it can grow on infertile soil and improve it at the same time. Gorse is famous for its striking yellow flowers that blaze open in April and May.
Growing Gorse Bushes
Gorse needs well drained soil and prefers sunny, southerly slopes - it gets a bit straggly in the shade. It grows equally well on wind blasted coastal locations and cold inland sites. It will grow in very poor, sandy soils as well as extremely acidic, peaty earth, but it isn't recommended for chalk.
Gorse Hedge Spacing: 2 plants per metre.Gorse is naturally an uneven, lumpy plant so don't try to clip into a tidy shape, just enjoy it for what it is! You can hard prune down to the ground after flowering if you decide it needs renovating.
In exposed, windy places, gorse won't grow much above 2 metres, but if it is in a sheltered, shady spot it can get a bit bigger.
Gorse is also called furze or whin.
