Malus domestica Hoary Morning
Browse all our apple trees here or read our guide to buying the right apple tree.
Hoary Morning Apple trees produce really classic looking cooking apples, large and flat with a yellow tinged green colour that can be overrun by red stripes and a bloom of little white specks. The flesh of the apples is not especially interesting when eaten raw, though it is less acidic than most other cooking apples. When cooked, it becomes markedly sweeter and keeps its shape nicely. A Hoary Morning apple tree is pretty vigorous and has constant, good sized crops from year to year. Being very scab resistant, this is a wise choice for the organic farmer. It was raised in Somerset in the early 1800s. It is good to pick in early October.
Pollination Partners for Hoary Morning
If in doubt about pollination, especially if you have several types of apple tree, go for a crab apple like Golden Hornet. Otherwise, Hoary Morning is in the mid-season flowering category and so could be pollinated by any of the fertile Trees- in the Apple Tree Pollination guide, especially other Trees- in the same category.
Hoary Morning Rootstocks
With the MM106 rootstocks that we use as standard, you have the choice of growing a medium to large apple tree or training your tree into any of the normal forms like a bush, cordon, fan or espalier. For 2009, only maiden Hoary Morning Trees- are available, we expect to have other sizes in stock next year.
