Mirabelle Golden Sphere - Prunus insitita

Mirabelle Golden Sphere is a member of the damson family (Prunus insitita). This is an outstanding choice, producing masses of sweet, golden fleshed plum-like fruit. Like all Mirabelle, Golden Sphere flowers very early and the fruits ripen in August and early September.

Mirabelles are French and are usually grown there to cook (hence Tarte aux Mirabelles) - they are also much used in plum brandy distillation. Mirabelle Golden Sphere is good for both these purposes but it is also sweet enough to eat straight off the tree.

Mirabelles are slender, slim trees and so are good in smaller gardens and they are reasonably self fertile. Golden Sphere flowers later than Ruby and so is less prone to frost damage in exposed positions. Nevertheless the best mirabelles grow facing south and/or west and they all like moist, well-drained soil that is neutral to slightly acidic.

Our Mirabelle Golden Sphere trees are on Brompton rootstocks and so will grow to 6 metres as a standard.
