Prunus Morello - Late Season

Description of Morello Trees & Cherries:
Morello is the best sour cooking cherry for the UK. If you want cherries for pies, jams or making alcohol, Morello is the one for you.
Smaller than their sweet cousins, these cherries are ripe for cooking when they are dark red.
If you leave them on the branch until they are almost black, you can try eating them fresh - they are very acidic and not to everyone's taste!

Morello trees flower very late & tend to avoid late spring frosts.
They are recommended for Scotland and the North.
They will also fruit well on north facing walls in the South.

Growing Morello Cherry Trees:
Rich soil is important - dig in plenty of good manure and compost before planting.
Soil drainage must be good.
The more sun your trees get the better your crops will be.
Cherry trees are targets for birds, so netting them is a good idea.
Only prune cherries in summer.

Pruning Sour Cherry trees:
Sour cherries fruit best on one year old wood, so yearly pruning to encourage new growth will give you the best crops.
For this reason, Morello is excellent for growing as a fan against a wall.

History & Parentage of Morello:
Morello is an old Kentish breed.
Before WW2 there were many sour cherries varieties in orchards, but today Morello is the only commercial variety, thanks to its disease resistance and good performance in poorer soil.
