Munstead Lavender Plants - Blue Lavender

These Munstead Lavender plants are 2 years old and in 1.5 Litre pots. They were cut back in spring for summer planting and should flower in September this year.

We grow one other English Lavender, Hidcote, with bluer flowers but less good in windy and seaside positions.

An evergreen, intensely aromatic shrub, Lavandula Munstead is a classic Lavender plant, with its purple-blue flowers and light misting of grey hairs on its leaves.
The plentiful flowering stems rise up above the foliage and break into flower from early July to late September, providing one of the best sources of nectar for pollinating insects.
Munstead lavender
is great for making a low hedge to border your flower beds or line a path and is best used where you can savour its heady aroma.

Lavender was an effective herbal antiseptic, used by soldiers to treat wounds, burns and disinfect bandages from the Roman era - there are records of its use from 60AD up to World War One, when standard medical supplies were often scarce.

Though not really a dwarf Lavender, Munstead tends to be a little smaller than its relatives, reaching around 60cms.

It is ideal for planting with other blue lavender plants to give a subtly varied, wild effect.

Planting and Caring for Lavandula Munstead

It should be no surprise that Munstead Lavender needs a good dose of sun and a well drained to dry soil.
Lavender plants do not really mind the cold but they hate wet ground in winter.
If necessary, drainage can be improved by creating a ridge or mound to plant intouse lots of grit, sand and low quality soil to bulk it up.
Lavender is good to plant on the coast and is very drought resistant once it is settled in.
Lavandula angustifolia Munstead will grow well in any soil type and actually performs better in less fertile sites, though it won't hurt to mix in a little compost if the soil is really poor.
The only fertiliser we recommend adding is a little bone meal.

Caring for and Pruning Lavender Plants:
Deadhead your flowers.
Clipping your plants hard each late autumn, after flowering, will ensure dense growth and lots of flowers the following year.

Cut back each stem to about two buds / cms of green growth.
There is a general fear about cutting into the woody stems and if you are regular with your pruning you should not need to.

If you do have to hard prune old lavender plants, do so a bit earlier in the season, as soon as the flowers begin to fade.

MINIMUM ORDER for Lavandula Munstead is 6 plants.
Delivery is in May only if you want to buy other potted plants at the same time.
