Prunus padus Watereri Trees - Large Standards - Delivered by Mail Order from the Nursery with a 1 Year Guarantee

Prunus padus Watereri tree is an ornamental variety of the native Bird Cherry tree. It is a bigger, slightly neater tree than its parent, with long strings of scented white flowers. It isn't a spreading tree, so it's suitable for most gardens.
Prunus padus Watereri trees can reach a height of about 15-18 metres.

How Standard Trees are Measured:
All the plants in the ornamental trees section are graded as standards, which means that they are measured by their girth in centimetres 1 metre above ground level (basically, their trunk's waist measurement). They aren't measured by their height, which will vary. So, a 6/8 standard has a trunk with a circumference of 6-8 centimetres and an 8/10 standard has a trunk 8-10 centimetres around. This measurement makes no difference to the tree's final height.
Standard trees are 2 - 3.5 metres tall (on average) when they arrive; they are the most mature trees that you can buy from us. We cannot tell you precisely how tall your trees will be before we deliver them.

General description of Prunus padus Watereri trees:
This tree only really differs from the wild Bird Cherry in its size and the length of the flower cones. It is a little less bushy than its parent and although it can be almost twice as tall, it has an upright habit overall and its slender branches droop under their own weight at the tips, so it doesn't take up much space. The white flowers smell of almonds and have yellow centres; a beautiful sight in spring, when the tree is bursting with flower cones (called racemes) up to 20cms in length, and buzzing with bees and butterflies.
In autumn the flowers are followed by a large number of small, inedible black fruit that contrast well with the bold autumnal colours of the foliage. The birds tend to eat them all pretty quickly.

History & uses of Prunus padus Watereri:
This tree was bred in 1914 and was called Prunus padus Grandiflora at first. It has won both the RHS Award of Garden Merit for being both simple to look after and beautiful, as well as the Award of Merit for its cut flowers.
