Purging Buckthorn - Bareroot Sapling Plants

Common or Purging Buckthorn, Rhamnus cathartica, is a large native shrub or bushy tree with lush green leaves, ideal for hedges. Its flowers are also green, so you won't really notice them, but they attract plenty of bees and butterflies, including the lovely yellow Brimstone butterfly. The abundant small berries are red as they ripening, turning black when they mature in the autumn, which looks good next to the leaves as they turn yellow.

Growing Purging Buckthorn
These dense shrubs will grow anywhere apart from very wet places, full shade or salty sites on the coast. They are happy on both chalk and acidic soils.
Hedge Spacing: 3 plants per metre.
Your plants will grow up to between 6 metres.

Purging buckthorn was used in the past to encourage vomiting and diarrhoea. It is mildly poisonous, so we strongly advise you to leave this piece of traditional medicine in the past!
