River Birch, Red Birch, Water Birch - Betula nigra Heritage
is a vigorous, fast-growing tree with the best birch bark going anywhere. For those of you who can't resist peeling off bits of Paperbark Birch, this is the tree for you. River Birch bark is wonderfully coloured and utterly pickable with dangly bits in shades of cinnamon, pink and brown bark just waiting to be peeled away to uncover creamy white inner bark. Betula nigra Heritage can be grown as either a lone ornamental tree, or as a multi-stemmed plant. It looks fantastic planted as three trunked multistems in an avenue.... The leaves are typical of the family, relatively sparse and turning gold in autumn.
River Birch will not grow in drier soils - it lives up to its name - so it is an outstanding tree for the kind of really wet ground where one usually plants dogwoods, willows and alders. If it is wet, Betula nigra Heritage can easily grow at a metre - 3ft a year. To 16m. Can we please emphasise this - if the ground is not naturally wet, do not buy this tree as it will surely die.
