Beech Hedging Plants

Beech Sapling Trees - Fagus sylvatica

Beech trees make a classic formal hedge - their lush green leaves respond well to clipping and they hang onto the branches through the winter, providing a bit of colour, a barrier to vision and helping to slow the winter winds. It is a big tree - a mature beech hedge can hide a house and be several metres thick - but it is happy to be kept at a height of 2 metres (more if you have a good ladder and less if you occasionaly prune some off the top). Green beech and Purple Beech will grow side by side and the foliage of a Purple Beech specimen tree in front of any green leaved hedge in summer looks electric. These plants are an excellent choice for any kind of hedge, forestry or large garden planting - we also stock Green Beech Standards.
Which Size Beech is Best for Hedging? Using smaller plants will help to keep the hedge thick from the base and are very likely to establish into a superb hedge. The largest plants are for more of an instant effect or for replacing plants in an old hedge. In our experience, the best sizes to use for a new hedge are between 60/80cms and 100-125cms - we sell bundles of 50 of the larger size beech.
When Should I use Hornbeam Instead? A Hornbeam hedge looks very similar to one made of beech and grows in much wetter soil, although it won't grow in a real swamp. If, the day after heavy rain, there are still puddles of rainwater all over the area where you are going to plant your hedge, then the ground is probably too wet for beech.
How to Plant a Beech Hedge: Beech grows vigorously in any well-drained soil, including chalky ones. After planting, use a clean pair of garden secateurs to snip the top inch off of all the main, central stems (sometimes there are two) on each plant. This is all you need to do to encourage the plants to bush out from the bottom.
