A Selection of the Best Specimen Trees for Small Gardens
Trees suitable for small gardens are an exclusive group that includes some of the most beautiful ornamental trees, featuring qualities like stylish bark, pretty fruit, good autumn colour and waves of flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Most trees listed here have a maximum height of between 4-10 metres, though we have also included some taller fastigiate trees, which are upright and have a narrow canopy width. Small trees aren't just for small gardens, of course, they also make great centrepieces for any garden designs.
When choosing small specimen trees, you need to be sure that they won't invade the root space of your other plants or block their light - something that trees have generally evolved to be good at - you also want it to maintain an attractive shape over the years. Some trees will produce masses of suckers if they are kept short, which looks good in a wild setting but may not suit every gardener. All the trees in this list are either naturally small, were bred into smaller forms by people down the years or were grafted onto a dwarfing rootstock. They will all gracefully reach a modest height.
