Sycamore Maple Trees - Large Standards - Delivered by Mail Order from the Nursery with a 1 Year Guarantee

The Sycamore Maple tree, Acer pseudoplatanus is a big, fast growing plant that will thrive almost anywhere. It makes a great windbreak tree for exposed coastal sites and is equally happy in the inner city.
Sycamore trees can reach a height of about 35-40 metres.
Standard trees are the largest size that we deliver; you can also buy younger Sycamore saplings here.

How Standard Trees are Measured:
All the plants in the ornamental trees section are graded as standards, which means that they are measured by their girth in centimetres 1 metre above ground level (basically, their trunk's waist measurement). They aren't measured by their height, which will vary. So, a 6/8 standard has a trunk with a circumference of 6-8 centimetres and an 8/10 standard has a trunk 8-10 centimetres around. This measurement makes no difference to the tree's final height.
Standard trees are 2 - 3.5 metres tall (on average) when they arrive; they are the most mature trees that you can buy from us. We cannot tell you precisely how tall your trees will be before we deliver them.

General description of Sycamore trees:
Fully grown, Sycamore is a magnificent specimen, rivaling any of our other large native trees. It is one of the best tall trees for a coastal windbreak. It is great for wildlife and every young child (in the days before handheld computer games, at least!) has surely tired themselves out in autumn by throwing the "helicopter" seeds up into air over and over again.

History & uses of Acer pseudoplatanus
Sycamores aren't strictly native British trees, but they may as well be. Native across Europe and Western Asia, they have been growing wild here for 800 years at the very least. They bear some similarity to the Plane tree, Platanus acerifolia and in Scotland they are commonly called Planes, which isn't necessarily confusing because the true Plane tree isn't really grown in the North. The Sycamore's botanical name, pseudoplatanus, means "False Platanus (Plane)".
Like the Plane tree, the Sycamore was one of the few trees that continued to thrive in our polluted, industrial revolution era cities when so many other species gave up and died in the smog.
Its strong timber carves beautifully; it is used for indoor furniture and eating utensils. The wood burns well and makes quality charcoal.
Sycamores get a bad reputation. They support a huge number of aphids, which thrive on the accessible, sweet sap of the tree and make a sticky mess underneath it, as anyone who has ever parked their car under a Sycamore knows. It is worth bearing in mind that although aphids are pest to a gardener, they are hugely important part of our native ecosystems, injecting a massive dose of easily obtainable sugar into the food chain. Masses of larger insects feed on them, which in turn get gobbled up by bigger animals, as well as several species of bird.
