Baumann's White Chestnut - Large Standard Trees

This tree is a version of Common Horse Chestnut with doubly thick flowers that doesn't grow quite so tall, which makes it a better choice for a garden. It is also sterile, so you won't get any conkers. This may be bad news for the kids, but it also means that this tree is safe to plant around livestock as Horse Chestnuts, despite the name, are poisonous to most animals.
You might want to have a look at the Red Horse Chestnut as well to give some variety to a group of trees.

Growing White Chestnut Trees
Horse Chestnuts are big trees with powerful roots, we recommend planting them at least 30 metres away from buildings. They will grow in any soil and young trees tolerate shade well, although they will do their best to grow rapidly up into the sun. Mature trees will often be as wide as they are tall: this variety will reach about 20 metres.

Aesculus hippocastanum 'Baumannii' appeared as a natural mutation, called a sport, of the common chestnut in 1820. It is sometimes listed as Aesculus hippocastanum 'Flore Pleno'

Please watch our tree planting video for full planting instructions.

How Standard Trees are Measured:
All the plants in the ornamental trees section are graded as standards, which means that they are measured by their girth in centimetres 1 metre above ground level (basically, their trunk's waist measurement). They aren't measured by their height, which will vary.

So, a 6/8 standard has a trunk with a circumference of 6-8 centimetres and an 8/10 standard has a trunk 8-10 centimetres around.

This measurement makes no difference to the tree's final height. Most standards are between 2 - 3.5 metres tall, but this is just an average. We cannot tell you how tall your trees will be before we deliver them.
