Majestica Whitebeam - Large Standard Trees

Majestica is a larger form of the common Whitebeam. Mature trees will reach about 5 metres taller on average and the leaves, flowers and fruits are also a bit bigger. It is otherwise the same and is good for adding some variety to a group of whitebeam trees. It is upright when young, becoming more of a rounded cone shape when mature. The distinctive leaves are bright green on top and covered with downy white "hairs" below. The foliage turns gold in the autumn, making a perfect backdrop for the dark red berries that hang in clusters until the birds finish them.
You can also buy the Whitebeam varieties Aurea and Lutescens, which have pale green to greeny yellow leaves. If you want to make a wild looking stand of trees, these are useful to mix things up and make it look less uniform.

Growing Majestica Whitebeam Trees
Whitebeams are excellent trees for chalk or limestone soils, polluted roadside areas and windy spots close to the sea, although they do need a reasonably fertile soil. Sorbus aria Majestica will reach about 20 metres tall.

Majestica is listed as Decaisneana in some older books. It won the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2002.

How Standard Trees are Measured:
All the plants in the ornamental trees section are graded as standards, which means that they are measured by their girth in centimetres 1 metre above ground level (basically, their trunk's waist measurement). They aren't measured by their height, which will vary.

So, a 6/8 standard has a trunk with a circumference of 6-8 centimetres and an 8/10 standard has a trunk 8-10 centimetres around.

This measurement makes no difference to the tree's final height. Most standards are between 2 - 3.5 metres tall, but this is just an average. We cannot tell you how tall your trees will be before we deliver them.
