Wild Cherry, Gean - Prunus avium
The Wild Cherry - prunus avium - also known as the Gean Tree, is a fast growing native that carries white flowers in spring and bitter but edible fruits in summer. The dark green leaves are bronze coloured when young & turn bright red/yellow in the autumn.
The red-brown wood of the cherry is used in cabinet making and for musical instruments and pipes.
Wild Cherry will grow almost anywhere except on sodden soils. As with all cherries any pruning or remedial work should be done in summer to reduce the risk of bacterial canker. To 20m
You can also buy large Wild Cherry trees that are a few years older than the plants on this page.
