Hawthorn Hedge Plants & Hawthorn Trees
Common Hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna, is Britain's most widely used hedging plant - a small native tree that grows quickly in almost any soil, with a dense bush of thorny branches that makes a secure barrier hedge. Hawthorn has masses of small white flowers in May that turn into bunches of red berries by autumn, all of which looks nice and is very popular with wildlife including nesting birds, bees and butterflies.
Which size of Hawthorn is best for Hedging? The smallest plants are the cheapest and, in the long run, will give the best hedges. We recommend using 60/80cms tall hawthorn as the best balance of height, rapid establishment and vigorous growth from close to the ground. Taller plants are there if you are in a hurry, or if you want to replace old plants in an established hedge. When do I plant Hawthorn? All of these plants have bare roots and delivery and planting is during the winter, between November and March. Planting A Hawthorn Hedge: To make a dense hedge from the ground up, trim your Hawthorn immediately after planting. When using the two smallest sizes (40/60cms or 60/80cms), cut each plant to down to half its height, making a sloping cut slightly above an outward facing bud. It will now branch out from there, thickening the base of the hedge. With the two biggest sizes (90/120 or 120/150), cut each plant back by a third. Hawthorn is a tough plant and will grow in fairly damp soil, but is not suitable for very boggy ground.
Looking for larger Hawthorn trees? We have our range of standard Hawthorn trees listed here also. Like our hedging, these are bare rooted and so only delivered during the autumn and winter.
