Varieties of Escallonia Shrubs & Hedge Plants

Escallonias are evergreen shrubs with glossy, aromatic leaves that clip easily into a neat hedge. In summer, they produce quite small but very colourful flowers that attract bees and butterflies. On a sunny year, you should get repeat flushes of flowers until September.

Escallonia 'Peach Blossom' and Escallonia 'Apple Blossom' are the slowest growing, smallest varieties that we stock and usually won't reach much more than 2.5 metres. These are most commonly planted as ornamental shrubs, but they will still make a perfectly good hedge.
All of the other varieties are more vigorous and will grow to 3-4 metres. Escallonia rubra macrantha is probably the fastest growing and it is the best choice for planting on a very windy site.

    Growing Escallonia:
These plants will tolerate any soil with good drainage (that is really the most important thing), including chalk and poor soil. They love a sunny site and are perfect for exposed, windy coastal locations. Escallonia can suffer some leaf damage in a really cold winter, but this is not a serious issue.
It is not recommended for inland frost pockets, sites in full shade or with poor drainage. If you are planting it in the North or Scotland, we recommended putting it in a sheltered, South facing location.
If your soil is poor and sandy, dig in lots of well rotted manure and compost a few weeks before planting day to help your plants establish quickly.

    Delivery information:
The planting and delivery season for pot-grown Escallonia is almost year round; we may delay delivery in mid-winter if the weather is too cold. Escallonia is not delivered bareroot.
Choose your delivery week during checkout. We will not charge your card until your plants are being packed for shipping. You will receive an e-mail the day before your plants are due to arrive. We use a 24 hour courier service.
All the plants you buy from our nursery are Guaranteed for 1 Year.

I just wanted to send you a quick message to let you know how very impressed I am by the roses that I purchased in the spring. I've grown roses for many years, but the quality and number of blooms on those purchased from Ashridge have surpassed them all. Many thanks! Mrs M Kelly
