Scrumptious - Eating Apples

Browse all our apple trees here or read our guide to buying the right apple tree.

With a powerful honey-like sweetness, saved from being sickly by a pleasant dose of acidity, and an unusual hint of strawberry, Scrumptious is an early apple that stands out from the rest. Sun-ripened fruit are bright red with a dappled touch of yellow and the white flesh is fairly crisp and very juicy. A comparatively new variety, it has not yet achieved the commercial fame that we think could await it, but savvy gardeners are recognising this apple as one of the finest early cropping breeds around. Your trees are ready to harvest in early September and the fruit, like almost all early apples, do not store well.

Scrumptious was bred from a cross between Golden Delicious and Discovery by Hugh Ermen in the early 1980's, during his time at the Brogdale Horticultural Trust. He is probably the greatest post war apple breeder.

Apple Tree Pollination Guide for Scrumptious

A reliably self-fertile breed, Scrumptious flowers in mid season and as a Group C apple it can cross pollinate with any apple tree in Groups B, C or D. Please remember that in the apple world, self fertile means the tree can produce apples without pollination by another variety. However the size and quality of the crop is always significantly improved if it is pollinated by a compatible partner.

Rootstocks and Cultivation Notes

Your trees come on MM106 rootstocks, apart from the cordons, which are on the semi-dwarfing M9 stock. Scrumptious trees are not especially vigorous, which could be a reason for their relative lack of commercial success, but they will come to bear heavy crops in the fullness of time. A really tough breed, we recommend it for both cold and damp regions.
