Pyrus Brandy - Mid Season

Description of Brandy Trees & Fruit:
Brandy pears are an old perry (pear cider) variety. You can brew a decent drink using just this pear, though it's best to mix in at least one other type of pear to get a really full bodied drink. The small, hard fruit have a ruddy brown flush. Brandy pear trees aren't very vigorous or spreading, which makes them ideal for tight spots or smaller gardens.

Characteristics of Brandy Trees:

  • Perry
  • Self Sterile.
  • Pollination Group B
  • Spur Bearer: suitable for cordons & training on wires.
  • Harvest: October.

Pollination Partners for Brandy:
To make fruit, pear trees need to be pollinated by another variety. Brandy is in pollination group B.
This means that it will cross-pollinate with trees in groups A-C.
Please see our guide to Pollinating Pear Trees for a full list of partners for Brandy.

Rootstocks:
Our Brandy Pear Tree maidens are grown on the Pyrodwarf rootstock (which isn't actually a dwarfing rootstock!) and will reach about 3.5 metres tall.

Growing Brandy Pear Trees:
Brandy can be affected by biennial cropping, which means that it will have a bumper crop one year and then a small crop the next. To reduce this effect, it pays to remove some of the fruit on a bumper year in June or July.
Rich soil is important - dig in plenty of good manure and compost before planting.
Soil drainage must be good.
The more sun your trees get the better your crops will be.

Details about delivery sizes: Guide to Fruit Tree Sizing.

History & Parentage of Brandy:
This tree dates back to at least the 1800's and comes from Gloucestershire.
