Thuja in general is a popular, low maintenance, formal evergreen hedge plant, and Brabant is one of the top cultivars for a full sized privacy hedge. The large plants we sell on this page are perfect for creating an instant screen. They're fast-growing with reddish-brown bark and vivid yellowish-green foliage that keeps its bright colour through the winter. Everyone loves the smell of the leaves when it's time to clip them; the flowers are inconspicuous but also well-scented.

Grown as a tree in fertile, well-drained soil, it can reach up to 15 metres but only 2.5m wide.

Delivery season: Rootballed Thuja hedge plants are only delivered during autumn/winter (October-March) and will be delivered on a pallet.

Growing Thuja Brabant

Thuja will grow in any well-drained soil, and tolerates partial shade.

A big reason for their immense popularity is that they can be clipped carelessly and pruned hard without ever forming bald patches, regrowing vigorously from old wood, unlike pretty much all other conifers (Yew also regrows perfectly well from old wood, but rather slowly).

Spacing Rootballed Thuja in a hedge: These large plants have quite wide rootballs, so they should be planted 60-75 apart along the hedgerow.

Did you know?

Thuja occidentalis may well be the first American tree ever to be grown in Europe, first recorded this side of the pond in 1536 when Jacques Cartier brought it from the Gulf of St Lawrence to Fontainebleau in Paris for King Francis I. 

North Brabant is the region in Holland where H. J. van de Laar selected this variety as a seedling in 1980 for G.J.F. Rombouts nursery. There is widespread speculation that it is a hybrid of Thuja occidentalis and T. plicata, but to our knowledge this has not been confirmed.

Thuja leaves and leaf oil are antibacterial, and have been used for respiratory tract infections, bacterial skin infections, and soothing viral cold sores.
