Crataegus Laevigata Plena Standard Trees

The plain English White Hawthorn tree, Crataegus laevigata Plena, is medium-sized, native and thorny with white flowers which can completely cover the tree in spring. They are double and develop a faint pink flush just before they fall. Hawthorn is an excellent tree for nesting birds. Suitable for most small gardens and any soil or site.  White Hawthorn trees can reach a height of about 8 metres.

How Standard Trees are Measured:
All our standards are graded by their girth in centimetres about 1 metre above soil level. They aren't graded by their height. So, a 6/8 standard has a trunk with a circumference of 6-8 centimetres and an 8/10 standard has a trunk 8-10 centimetres. Generally standard trees are 2.5 - 4.5 metres tall when they arrive, and they are the most mature trees that you can buy from us. 

Notes on planting English White Hawthorn trees:
You can grow Hawthorn almost anywhere, including chalky soil and pretty wet, boggy places. It is happy in poor soil, polluted spots by a road or industrial site and is good to plant in very exposed, windy sites.
They will grow on the coast, although they won't grow on really thin, sandy soil with no organic matter in it.
They don't mind growing in shade, but they will produce fewer flowers.

Prepare your site before planting:
It is good to dig over the site where you plant a tree several months in advance. Kill the weeds first: for tough weeds like nettles, brambles and ground elder, you will usually need a weed-killer to get rid of them. When you dig the soil over, remove stones and other rubbish and mix in well rotted compost or manure down to the depth of about 2 spades.
