We strongly recommend that you plant your bareroot plants right away, but we know that this isn't always possible.
Your plants will be fine inside their packaging for about 10 days without any attention. If planting is going to be delayed longer than that, you just need to make sure that their roots remain moist. Open a little hole in the side of the packaging and spray a hose in there for a few seconds.
If you unwrapped & inspected your plants when they arrived, you need to wrap the roots up again. Use the packaging they came in, or bin liners if necessary, and secure the plastic around the stems of the plants so that the roots are well protected from wind. You can store your plants upright or lying on their sides.
Always store your bareroot plants in the coldest, shadiest outdoor spot you can find. You can create shade if necessary with a plastic sheet or tarpaulin. If you have no safe place out doors, an unheated garage with the window open will do.
Important Don'ts for storing bareroot plants:
Storing Pot Grown Plants: It is fine to store these anywhere outside. Water them if there is no rain for 2 weeks, but this is usually not a problem in winter.
If the weather is freezing: Never move your plants when they are frozen. Roots are amazingly tough and can freeze solid without being damaged, but they do become brittle and will snap if you bend them at all. Remember that you cannot plant anything when the soil is frozen, so you shouldn't need to move your plants anyway.
