The best way to water a hedge or line of shrubs is with a leaky pipe: you can use a timer to turn it on and off in the morning.
Using some kind of mulch will preserve the soil moisture.
How to water your plants: If you planted out container grown trees & shrubs, the soil from the pot will probably be held in a lump by the roots. If using a hose, direct the water right onto that lump of soil, next to the plant's stem.
Let the water run for a full minute per plant so that it really has time to soak in.

Please Remember: If your soil traps water, it is possible to overwater your plants. You can check the soil to see if it needs water: dig down about 5 cm's, if the soil is dry and dusty then it's time to water.
When should I water my plants? Plants need water during the day, so the early morning is the best time to water.
Your plants also need mulch to trap the moisture.
