With an abundance of ruffled flowers up to 18cm in size, Belle of Woking creates an elegant backdrop along fences and walls. Each fully double bloom has masses of white-mauve petals that become paler as they age, surrounding delicate yellow or cream anthers. Growing Belle of Woking

Like all clematis, she prefers cool roots while its head is in full sun or part shade. She thrives in alkaline to neutral, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Water well after planting and keep soil moist during dry weather for the first few growing seasons.

Support by tying into wires or trellis. Group 2 Clematis should be pruned in late winter or early spring, and again after flowering in early summer.

Planting Companions

The luminescent blooms combine beautifully with other clematis in deeper colours such as Daniel Deronda and Niobe, or a climbing rose like the glorious crimson Etoile de Hollande. At the other end of the colour palette, she is perfect for white or pastel borders alongside perennials like Peonies, Sweet Rocket and Lupin 'Noble Maiden'.

Did You Know?

According to Dr Magnus Johnson’s book The Genus Clematis, she was raised by Jackmans of Woking in 1875, crossed from Clematis lanuginosa ‘Candida’ and ‘Fortunei’.
Established by William Jackman in 1810, by the 1870s William's grandson, George, was running the business, breeding clematis and selling trees, roses and shrubs.

Jackmans also created the popular hybrid Clematis jackmanii.

Keep soil moist during dry weather in the first few growing seasons. Provide wires or trellis as support for the clematis. Prune in late winter or early spring back to a pair of healthy buds, and again after flowering in early summer.
