Many of our customers ask us whether our plants are grown in the UK.
Ashridge Nurseries can say that "by number of different species of plant sold - the vast majority are UK grown". In terms of a percentage - 90% are UK grown.
We have several production nurseries in the UK and many of our plants and trees are growing right now in Lincolnshire, Somerset, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Kent, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.
I know that it's a little too early to be talking about Christmas Trees, however we recently visited our Christmas trees this summer at Mendip Christmas Tree Farm near Shepton Mallet in Somerset. They are an example of trees that are allocated exclusively to us.
These are Nordmann Fir premium-grade Christmas Trees, which is Britain’s best-selling Christmas tree, and there’s a reason for that - because they retain their foliage for longer (meaning low maintenance and less mess), and have soft and glossy needles (child-friendly).
Note the metal rod fixed to the top of the Christmas tree (with a clothes peg), that's there to stop pigeons and other birds from landing on the top and breaking the lead branch that will form the perfect top to your Christmas tree - so that your fairy or star can take pride of place at the top of your tree.
You can see the new growth, which appears as a light green at this time of year but will darken as Christmas approaches.
This one is going to be a beauty!
There are thousands of Christmas trees here and hundreds have been allocated to Ashridge Trees for this coming Christmas.
The trees are cared for on a daily basis, looking after the new growth, but continuously shaping them to be perfect for December. It's very intensive in terms of labour, but the perfect Christmas tree takes time and effort.
Here is Dr Hal Macfie looking after our trees (he's also a consultant on Sensory and Consumer Science and Visiting Professor of Food Biosciences at Reading University!)
Ashridge Nurseries have a number of different trees allocated exclusively to us, which are grown throughout the UK, from fruit trees and garden trees to hedging plants and roses. It's part of our commitment to have UK grown plants, keeping our customers happy and delivering a great service direct to your door.
It's just a reminder that growing trees and plants is a year round obsession.
