Cute looking they may be (edible, more like &#8211; Ed), but they have a horrid habit of hacking branches straight through (usually close to the stem) and of tearing leaves off plants they don&#8217;t bite&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/rabbits-near-hedging.webp\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>We have a standing out area at Ashridge Nurseries where we have a fair number of potted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/hedging-plants\" title=\"Hedge Plants\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hedge plants<\/a> &#8211; <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">escallonia<\/span>, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">griselinia<\/span>, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">pyracantha<\/span>, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">photinia<\/span> and so on.<\/p>\n<p>I walked out there this morning to find that a rabbit or rabbits had bitten through the electrified rabbit proof fence (yes, bitten and no sign of a dead one) and plundered the plants. Actually they had plundered the <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Elaeagnus<\/span><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">ebbingei<\/span> Limelight with barely a glance at the rest.<\/p>\n<p>I guess the silver lining is that we know that <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Elaeagnus<\/span> is not a good idea as a hedge plant when rabbits are about.
