Seems barbaric now, and besides, perhaps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taniacompton.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tania Compton<\/a> doesn&#8217;t want me snooping about her garden at night to admire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/snowdrop-bulbs\" title=\"\">Snowdrops<\/a> by moonlight? <\/p>\n<p>And much as I adore the wonderful coral spikes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/scarlet-willow-trees-salix-alba-chermesina\">Salix alba &#8216;Britzensis&#8217;<\/a>, I&#8217;m not schlepping to Oregon to admire them:<\/p>\n<p>And here are some willow shoots I snowed on earlier:<\/p>\n<figure class=\" size-full wp-image-8826\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/dogwood.jpg\" alt=\"Beautiful scarlet willow shoots amongst the snow\" class=\"wp-image-8826\"><figcaption>Beautiful scarlet willow shoots amongst the snow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/garden-trees\/willow-salix&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1642248365071000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2la69HfQMAQm6Pk6lUex82\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/willow-trees-salix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willows<\/a> are great near water, as are <a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/hedging\/dogwood&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1642248365071000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3PYgsmZgyKhoDe3gyynK_b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/dogwood-hedging-plants-cornus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dogwoods<\/a>, both of which have some striking bark colours from yellow through reds and oranges to purple and violet.<\/p>\n<p>Evergreen plants all qualify as winter garden staples, but there is something about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/green-holly-hedge-plants-ilex-aquifolium\">Holly<\/a>, especially 100% berried varieties such as Golden King, that is hard to beat: it&#8217;s the complete package of great foliage studded with vivid colour. Another exciting option is <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/ornamental-evergreen-bushes\">Mahonia<\/a> &#8211; there is a great cultivar called <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/plants\/77125\/mahonia-media-winter-sun\/details\">Winter Sun<\/a> that we don&#8217;t sell (yet). For a more straightforward evergreen hedge that flowers in winter, try <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/dawn-viburnum-bodnantense-plants\">Viburnum \u00d7 bodnantense &#8216;Dawn&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/winter-flowering-jasmine-nudiflorum-plants\" title=\"\">Winter Jasmine, Jasminum nudiflorum<\/a>, is a bit of a one-trick plant that some gardeners avoid because after it flowers in winter, there isn&#8217;t much else to say about it. <br \/>It&#8217;s a matter of right plant, right place: it&#8217;s really a weeping plant, so growing it where it can trail downwards plays to its nature and saves you from working to tie it up against a wall. It also needs regular pruning to remove old wood: neglected Winter Jasmines look sad in winter with their sparse flowers. A less controversial option is the evergreen winter clematis group, cirrhosa, with great varieties like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/freckles-clematis-cirrhosa-plants\" title=\"\">Freckles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Winter Cherries, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/autumn-cherry-blossom-trees-prunus-subhirtella-autumnalis\" title=\"\">Prunus \u00d7 subhirtella<\/a> and their pink form, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/pink-winter-cherry-blossom-trees-prunus-subhirtella-rosea\" title=\"\">Rosea<\/a>, are not spectacular like summer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/cherry-blossom-trees-prunus\" title=\"\">cherry blossoms<\/a>, but their dainty little flowers are still held on a tree&#8217;s branches, projected above you against the rolling old sky.<\/p>\n<p>A staple of country hedges, the common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/spindle-hedge-plants-native-euonymus-europaeus\" title=\"\">Spindle plant, Euonymus europaeus<\/a>, has unique pink and orange seed pods.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/sweet-box-plants-sarcococca-confusa\">Sarcococca confusa<\/a>, Sweet Box, is a rare example of a well-scented plant for the winter garden, and its shade tolerance means you can squeeze it in almost anywhere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/winter-aconite-bulbs-eranthis-hyemalis-cilicica\">Winter aconites<\/a> are bulbs with cute little yellow flowers, which you can plant dry in Autumn or in the green in Spring<\/p>\n<p>Winter Jasmine, Jasminum nudiflorum, is not scented like other Jasmines, but it has yellow flowers in winter over green stems that really brighten up the place. It has a reputation for looking messy the rest of the year, and this is often true, but here&#8217;s a tip: Winter Jasmine looks best as a trailing shrub, tumbling down a slope or wall, rather than growing up it. <\/p>\n<p>Here are 8 other plants to check out for their winter display (we don&#8217;t sell any of them, so don&#8217;t ask!):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Christmas Rose &#8211; Helleborus niger<\/li>\n<li>Winter Honeysuckle &#8211; Lonicera fragrantissima<\/li>\n<li>Winterberry &#8211; Ilex verticillata<\/li>\n<li>Witch Hazel &#8211; Hamamelis species<\/li>\n<li>Wintersweet &#8211; Chimonanthus praecox<\/li>\n<li>Coronilla valentina subsp. glauca<\/li>\n<li>Sarcococca hookeriana var. digyna<\/li>\n<li>Stachyurus praecox<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colour from bark, leaves and some flowers will light up your winter garden<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":613787866117,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[57,109],"class_list":["post-611965731142","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gardening","tag-gardening-tips-garden-design","tag-winter"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
