{"id":611972088134,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:48","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/plum-fruit-split\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:41:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:41:20","slug":"plum-fruit-split","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/fruit\/plum-fruit-split\/","title":{"rendered":"Plum Fruit Split"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Plum Fruit split is a condition, not a disease, where the fruit is damaged by splits in the skin. <\/h2><p>Although they tend to be on the surface, by breaking the skin they allow diseases and pests to attack otherwise healthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/plum-fruit-trees\">plums and gages<\/a>.<\/p><div><figure class=\" size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plum-fruit-split-e1739134163821.webp\" alt=\"Split plum on the branch\" class=\"wp-image-12576\" style=\"width:484px;height:auto\"><\/figure><\/div><h3>Why are my plums splitting on the tree?<\/h3><p><strong>Erratic watering<\/strong> causes plum fruit to split. <br>The splits are most common when a long hot dry spell is broken by plenty of rain. <br>The rush of moisture makes the fruit swell too quickly for the delicate skins, which split.<\/p><h3>How do I stop my plums from splitting?<\/h3><p>The cure is to ensure a consistent supply of moisture, which may require irrigation in some areas, but it\u2019s better to achieve it by mulching deeply every Spring.<br>Mulch all the way around the tree, at least 30cm past its \u201cdrip line\u201d, meaning the edge of its canopy.
