{"id":611972120902,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:48","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/quince-leaf-blight-disease\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:41:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:41:26","slug":"quince-leaf-blight-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/fruit\/quince-leaf-blight-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Quince Leaf Blight Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>What are these brown spots on my quince tree\u2019s leaves and fruit?<\/h3><ul>\n<li>\n<strong>Quince Leaf Blight<\/strong> is the fungus Diplocarpon mespili, which ruin your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/serbian-gold-quince-trees\">quince<\/a> crops. <\/li>\n<li>It also hits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/nottingham-medlar-trees-mespilus-germanica\">medlars<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/pear-fruit-trees\">pears<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/hawthorn-hedge-plants-crataegus-monogyna\">hawthorn<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/pyracantha-hedging-plants\">pyracantha<\/a>, but is almost never serious on those. <\/li>\n<li>It is closely related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/roses\/rose-black-spot-disease-leaves\">Rose Black Spot<\/a>, and is <strong>worst in a wet summer<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>Leaf Blight causes lots of brown splotches on leaves with dark dots in the middle. <\/p><p>These start off reddish-brown then turn darker brown or black, typically joining up to make larger, irregular shaped patches on the leaves. <\/p><div><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/leaf-blight-on-quince-leaf.webp\" alt=\"Leaf Blight on Quince Leaf\"><\/figure><\/div><p>Once they spread enough, the rest of the leaf usually turns yellow and falls off.<\/p><p>The disease can spread to the fruit, which will show the same spotting and blotching, and often distort. <br>In severe cases, the soft wood at the tips of the shoots can be blighted and can die back.<\/p><div><figure class=\" size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/quince-blight-fruit-e1739136251896.webp\" alt=\"Quince blight on fruit\" class=\"wp-image-12582\" style=\"width:568px;height:auto\"><\/figure><\/div><h3>Quince leaf blight treatment<\/h3><p>As with most fungal infections, good hygiene works wonders. The disease is worst in areas where humidity is high and air movement low.<\/p><ul>\n<li>Rake up and burn the leaves of infected trees when they fall. <\/li>\n<li>In Autumn, do the same with all leaves from the area where the tree is growing. <\/li>\n<li>Cut out infected shoots and burn those too. <\/li>\n<li>Remove dead twigs and branches anytime.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>It may take a couple of years to eradicate, but the consistent burning of debris will kill overwintering spores. <\/p><h3>Disease resistant Quince varieties<\/h3><p>According to the RHS, the cultivars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/serbian-gold-quince-trees\">\u2018Serbian Gold\u2019<\/a> and \u2018Aromatnaya\u2019 were least affected by leaf blight in the wet Summer of 2023. <br>They were not disease free, but had little or no early leaf drop when more susceptible varieties were almost defoliated.<\/p><h3>Spraying with Fungicide<\/h3><h4>There are no fungicides available for use in the UK on fruit trees intended for eating.<\/h4><p>If you are not eating the fruit, you could spray your quince tree immediately and again in Spring just as the leaves open.<\/p><ul>\n<li>Provanto \u2018Fungus Fighter Concentrate\u2019 and Toprose \u2018Fungus Control &amp; Protect\u2019 contain tebuconazole &amp; trifloxystrobin, Provanto \u2018Fungus Fighter Concentrate\u2019 only contains tebuconazole.<\/li>\n<li>Rose Clear Ultra contains both triticonazole against fungus and acetamiprid against insects. It is effective against Quince leaf blight, but overkill. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<section class=\"prodshow-shopify-block\" \n         id=\"prodshow-block-1\"\n         >\n\t\n\t<div
