{"id":611972284742,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:48","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/silver-leaf-disease\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:41:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:41:21","slug":"silver-leaf-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/fruit\/silver-leaf-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Silver Leaf Diagnosis &amp; Treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is no <strong>need to be afraid<\/strong> of <strong>Silver Leaf disease<\/strong>, which <strong>rarely <\/strong>affects <strong>Cherry <\/strong>and <strong>Plum<\/strong> trees in gardens, and even then typically on old trees. <\/p><p>The disease is a concern for orchard owners, who have their livelihoods on the line with long rows of the same variety, creating the ideal environment for disease to spread.<\/p><p>With that said, when you have a choice about when to prune your Cherries and Plums, you may as well play it safe and prune them in Spring-Summer.<\/p><p>If you have to prune them in Winter, then so be it. Covering the wound with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/medo-pruning-grafting-sealant\">pruning paint<\/a> will reduce the risk even further.<\/p><h3>What Happens with Silver Leaf?<\/h3><p>The leaves of infected plants take on a silvery sheen.<\/p><ul>\n<li>Infected branches have brown staining in the wood; you can see this in the grain when you cut an infected branch off the tree.<\/li>\n<li>The disease can start in a single branch, which will begin to die back.<\/li>\n<li>If not checked, it will kill the whole plant.<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3>Which plants does Silver Leaf attack?<\/h3><p>Silver Leaf attacks a range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/fruit-trees\">fruit trees<\/a> (most famously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/victoria-plum-trees\">Victoria Plum<\/a>) including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/plum-fruit-trees\">plums<\/a>, damson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/cherry-fruit-trees-sweet-acid\">cherry<\/a>, peach, apricot, and very rarely pear and apple.<br>It can infect a few other trees such as Laburnum, and poplars, but it mainly attacks members of the family Prunus (which includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/cherry-laurel-hedge-plants-prunus-laurocerasus-rotundifolia\">cherry laurel<\/a>, but those are regularly trimmed in Winter and I have never heard of one catching the disease).<\/p><h3>How does Silver Leaf work?<\/h3><p>Silver Leaf (Chondrostereum purpureum) is a fungus whose spores penetrate a tree\u2019s defences through recent wounds such as snapped branches and pruning cuts.<\/p><p>The spores grow fungal threads, which penetrate living wood, killing it as they proceed.<\/p><p>The silver leaves are caused by a poison which the fungus releases that causes the outer cells on the leaf to separate, resulting in the silvery sheen from which the disease gets its name.<\/p><p>The silver leaves themselves are in no way infectious.
