{"id":611973235014,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:47","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/old-vs-antique-rose-variety-difference\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:41:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:41:15","slug":"old-vs-antique-rose-variety-difference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/roses\/old-vs-antique-rose-variety-difference\/","title":{"rendered":"Old Roses VS Antique Roses"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>What are Old Garden Roses?<\/h3><p>The standard definition of an <strong>Old Garden Rose<\/strong> is that it belongs to a <strong>class<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/rose-bushes\">rose<\/a> that existed before 1867 (not counting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/wild-rose-plants\">wild roses<\/a>, also known as species roses), even if it was bred more recently.<\/p><p>So, according to this definition, an <strong>Old Garden Rose <\/strong>could have been bred in the last few years, while some \u201cmodern roses\u201d still available today were bred 150 years ago.<\/p><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/old-rose.webp\" alt=\"Old Garden Rose\"><\/figure><p>The date 1867 marks the introduction of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/hybrid-tea-rose-bushes\">Hybrid Tea rose<\/a>, \u201cLa France\u201d, which was bred from two Old Rose classes: the Hybrid Perpetual rose \u201cMadame Victor Verdier\u201d and the Tea rose \u201cMadame Bravy\u201d.<\/p><h3>Old Rose VS Antique Rose<\/h3><p>Old Garden Roses are generally lumped into 2 main categories.<br>As with many such lists of this nature, it can be debated where or whether some of them belong, this is just an introduction:<\/p><ul>\n<li>\n<strong>Antique Roses<\/strong>: Only flower once per year. The only roses that existed in Europe before the 1790\u2019s.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Old Roses<\/strong>: Most repeat flower due to having the Rosa chinensis, The China Rose, in their ancestry. The China rose revolutionised rose breeding in Europe from the early 1790\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>Famous <strong>Antique Rose<\/strong> (once-flowering) <strong>categories include<\/strong>: Alba, Centifolia, Damask, Gallica, Moss, Portland (AKA Damask Perpetual). Most people also include Rambling roses.<\/p><p>Famous <strong>Old Rose<\/strong> (repeat flowering) <strong>categories include<\/strong>: Bourbon, China, Hybrid Perpetual, Noisette, Tea.<\/p><p>Some
