{"id":611973857606,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:46","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/best-time-planting-hedges-trees\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:41:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:41:09","slug":"best-time-planting-hedges-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/best-time-planting-hedges-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Best Time To Plant Hedges &amp; Trees In the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhich month is best for planting?\u201d is an age-old debate!<\/p><p><strong>You can plant <\/strong>trees or hedges at <strong>any time of year<\/strong>. <br>There are pros &amp; cons to each season.<\/p><p><strong>Watering new plants well<\/strong> in dry weather until they are established is the <strong>most important<\/strong> thing.<\/p><h2>Bareroot Season Starts In Autumn \u2013 November<\/h2><p>With woody plants like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/garden-trees-big-standards\">trees<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/hedging-plants\">hedge plants<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/rose-bushes\">rose bushes<\/a>, it\u2019s <strong>always better to buy them bareroot<\/strong>.<br>Bareroot plants are <strong>delivered during the winter planting season<\/strong>, from November to April.<\/p><p><strong>November<\/strong> is the last month of Autumn, but the first month of the winter planting season, so it\u2019s <strong>Early Planting<\/strong> in this context.<\/p><p>Bareroot plants that are planted in November, when the soil retains some warmth, should see better root establishment with earlier and stronger top-growth the following Spring. <\/p><h3>Advantages of Early Bareroot Planting<\/h3><p>Planting Early, in November, is best practice where possible: there is no bad month.<\/p><ul>\n<li>\n<strong>Root Growth:<\/strong><ul><li>Roots have time to establish before supporting new leaves, leading to better nutrient and water uptake in Spring.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Moisture:<\/strong><ul><li>Autumn typically has more dew and rainfall, so additional watering may be unnecessary.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Reduced Water Loss:<\/strong><ul><li>Lower temperatures decrease water loss from foliage &amp; new bark.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3>Advantages of Late Bareroot Planting<\/h3><p>Planting Late, in March, has advantages in some situations:<\/p><ul>\n<li>\n<strong>Plants Not Exposed all Winter:<\/strong><ul><li>New evergreen trees can be stressed by cold wind, so Late Planting is preferable in very exposed locations; if they must be planted Early, they can be protected from strong wind with some wrapping or windbreak.<br>\n<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Planting on Clay:<\/strong><ul>\n<li>Heavy clay that waterlogs all Winter is rare in gardens, but where it does, Late Planting allows plants to establish in drier soil before the next waterlogged season.<\/li>\n<li>Plants that grow well in damp clay may still fail if they are transplanted into wet clay soil.<\/li>\n<li>Yew is particularly sensitive to waterlogging in the first year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul><h3>Advantages of Planting Pot Grown Trees in Summer<\/h3><ul>\n<li>Only available option outside of Winter<\/li>\n<li>Plants will be happy in their pots for months if there is a delay<\/li>\n<li>Potted or rootballed plants often don\u2019t need any staking<\/li>\n<\/ul><h2>Summary<\/h2><ul>\n<li>\n<strong>November<\/strong>: Getting the roots into the ground early allows them to develop through the winter whenever temperatures rise.<br>The tree has better access to water and nutrients when it comes into growth in Spring. This is the best start to the year!<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>December-February<\/strong>: Trees are fully dormant, so suffer less stress\/disturbance when they are lifted &amp; transplanted.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>March<\/strong>: The ground is warming, so plants can start to establish roots promptly, but leaf production is often delayed. Good watering in dry weather is even more essential.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Rest of year:<\/strong> Drying out is the enemy, so be sure you can water potted plants that you plant out in late Spring to
