In most cases, they still crop noticeably better when cross-pollinated by another variety; most plums are perfectly self fertile, while almost no apples and maybe one pear truly are.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Self-sterile \/ Self-incompatible: <\/strong>Most fruit trees are in this group. They can\u2019t pollinate themselves, but do cross-pollinate other varieties of the same species that are in flower at the same time.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Triploids:<\/strong> A small handful of trees, such as the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/bramley-apple-trees\">Bramley<\/a> cooking apple, can\u2019t pollinate themselves nor other trees. You therefore need another other tree to pollinate the triploid, plus a third tree to cross-pollinate with that pollinator, because the triploid can\u2019t return the favour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On rare occasion, two specific fruit trees are too closely related to be compatible: our pollination tool takes this into account.<\/p>\n<h3>Do I Need My Own Pollination Partners for my Fruit Trees?<\/h3>\n<p>In over 75% of the UK, you will have compatible trees already in your neighbourhood, especially when you consider that most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/crab-apple-trees-malus\">crab apples<\/a> pollinate orchard apples, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/wild-cherry-sapling-plants-prunus-avium\">wild cherries (gean)<\/a> pollinate sweet cherries (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/cherry-blossom-trees-prunus\">ornamental cherries<\/a>, however, generally do not).<br>The main places where pollination is an issue are remote and windy, typically surrounded by forestry or livestock with few gardens or orchards.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Wild crabapple trees help pollinate other surrounding fruit trees\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/wild-crab-apple-blossom.webp\"><\/figure>\n<h3>What if I Only Have Space for One Fruit Tree?<\/h3>\n<p>First, have a look around your neighbourhood to see what is growing locally, and ask your neighbours with fruit trees which varieties they have. If that doesn\u2019t help, then definitely choose a self-fertile tree.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Insects, Mainly Bees, are Vital for Pollination<\/h3>\n<p>Bees and other insects carry pollen between flowers: even self-fertile trees need them to move their own pollen around their flowers, so an orchard is an ideal place for a beehive, and to encourage wild bees. <br>In exposed, windy locations, or at high altitude above about 800ft, bees find it hard to fly, so it is even more important to provide habitats and windbreaks to help them out; also, it\u2019s best to stick to reliably self-fertile varieties that make the most of limited pollinators.<\/p>\n<h4>How close do fruit trees need to be to cross-pollinate?<\/h4>\n<p>The closer they are, the better, but anything within 500 feet \/ 150 metres should be fine.<\/p>\n<h3>Can an apple tree pollinate a pear or cherry or plum tree?<\/h3>\n<p>No, one species of fruit tree cannot pollinate a different species. <br>One variety of apple can
