We\u2019re going to show you how to plant formal garden hedge. We\u2019ve used Yew in this film, but the same procedure can be followed for Beech, Box, Hornbeam, Privet and all other formal hedging plants. These plants are available barerooted during the winter planting season, which runs from November through to March (approximately), and in containers during the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Before you start, you will need a sprayer or watering can, if you\u2019re going to use weed killer, a spade, sharp knife, a few canes, string, a bucket, a one meter long piece of wood. And, on planting day, you will need your plants.<\/p>\n<p>Using canes and string, mark out the area of the planting trench. In this film, we\u2019re going to show you how to plant a Yew hedge in a single row where the trench should be 60cm wide. If you\u2019re planting in a double row, which is preferable for Beech, for instance, then the trench would be 90cm wide, and there would be 40cm between the rows.<\/p>\n<p>Apply a non-residual weed killer, following the manufacturer\u2019s instructions, a minimum of four weeks before you intend to plant. Remove the turf, which you can put upside down on your compost heap. Now, take the earth from the trench, removing roots and stones and stack it on a sheet nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Check the depth of the trench. Make sure the plants will be no deeper in the soil than the level they grew at before they were lifted. If in doubt, it is always better to plant too high than too deep.<\/p>\n<p>Take one bundle of plants out of their wrapping. Cut the string and soak the roots in the bucket of water. Mark the planting line with two canes and a piece of string.<\/p>\n<p>Even spacing of plants in a formal hedge is important. We suggest using a measuring stick to help you. Following the instructions for each plant type.<\/p>\n<p>The one we\u2019re using here is for planting at three per meter.<\/p>\n<p>Using the string as an indication of soil level, hold each plant at the correct height and return the soil under and around the roots, firming as you go.<\/p>\n<p>This does not have to be done by hand, you can use a spade. Before you finally firm the ground, double-check the spacing of the plants.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important with barerooted plants that a good contact is established between the roots and the soil, as soon as they\u2019re planted. Without stamping, firm the ground around each plant using your full body weight. It\u2019s a good idea to hold the plant vertical whilst doing this. Don\u2019t forget to water your hedge after planting and during dry spells in the spring until it\u2019s well established.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve just planted your first formal hedge. Well done!<\/p><\/details><p>When planting a hedge, or any trees, be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/gardening\/watering-new-trees-hedging\">sure to water them correctly<\/a> or they will die!<\/p>\n<h3>Comparing A Trench Planted Garden Hedge to a Slit Planted Country Hedge<\/h3>\n<p>The classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/native-british-hedging-plants\">country hedge plants<\/a>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/hawthorn-hedge-plants-crataegus-monogyna\">Hawthorn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/hazel-hedging-plants-corylus\">Hazel<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/blackthorn-sloe-hedge-plants-prunus-spinosa\">Blackthorn<\/a>, are delivered in <strong>smaller bareroot <\/strong>in sizes up to 80cm, to be <strong>slit planted in Winter<\/strong> as shown in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/planting-bareroot-mixed-native-hedge-winter\">mixed country hedge video<\/a>.<br>However, in order to plant country hedging in large sizes over 80cm, trench planting could be necessary where ploughing is not possible.<\/p>\n<h4>Trench Planting is Best for Roots<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Formal hedge plants sold bareroot in small sizes under 80cm tall <strong>could <\/strong>be slit planted, especially in decent garden topsoil.<\/li>\n<li>Nevertheless, breaking up the soil will greatly speed up root establishment for your valuable hedging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Mulch Requirements<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Country hedging usually needs a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/weed-suppression-mulch-fabric-and-pegs-pack\">mypex fabric weed barrier<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>Garden hedging is better served with hoeing and <strong>organic mulch or wood chips,<\/strong> unless you have a serious weed problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Bareroot Season Vs Year Round<\/h4>\n<ul><li>You can plant pot-grown garden hedging at any time of year. Autumn is convenient because the wet weather should water your new plants, but Summer is good too if irrigation is adequate.<\/li><\/ul>\n<h4>Light Pruning Regime for Garden Hedges<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Country hedge plants are cut back hard after planting. <\/li>\n<li>Evergreen garden hedge plants are <strong>not cut back <\/strong>at planting time at all if they are conifers, especially Yew, where you don\u2019t cut the leading stem until it\u2019s 10cm over your desired height. <ul><li>Broadleaf evergreens, beech, and hornbeam all just have their leading stem tips nipped off.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Planting Accessories<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/hedging-plants\">Hedging<\/a> \u2013 Bareroot plants are cheapest (Nov-April delivery only). Pot grown plants are delivered year round: some plants are only sold pot-grown.<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/bamboo-canes\">Bamboo Canes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Fertiliser is only necessary on depleted soils, and it should not be combined with Rootgrow (below). If you use Rootgrow and your soil is poor, use bone meal as a top dressing instead of mixing it into the planting hole.<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/rootgrow-universal-friendly-mycorrhizae-fungi\">Mycorrhizae friendly fungi (Rootgrow)<\/a> practically essential, in our book. If you are using it, which we cannot recommend enough, then do not add bonemeal or any other fertilisers to the planting hole. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Classic Formal Hedge Plants<\/h3>\n<p>The list below is not exhaustive, but these formal hedging plants &amp; shrubs are by far the most popular. Between them, they grow almost anywhere, they look neat and tidy, and they are easy to maintain. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/common-green-beech-hedge-plants-fagus-sylvatica\">Beech, Green<\/a>: Not evergreen, but it holds its autumn leaves through winter. Any well drained soil.<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/copper-beech-hedge-plants-fagus-sylvatica-purpurea\">Beech, Copper<\/a>: As above, with deep purple leaves in summer.<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/box-hedging-plants\">Box<\/a>: Evergreen. Very shade tolerant, slow growing.<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/western-red-cedar-hedge-plants-thuja-plicata\">Cedar, Western Red<\/a>: Evergreen. Fragrant foliage. Slower growing than Cypress, so you can get away with clipping only once a year \u2013 never miss a year, though. Like most conifers, it can\u2019t be hard pruned.<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/lawsons-cypress-hedge-plants-chamaecyparis-lawsoniana\">Cypress, Lawsons<\/a>: Evergreen. Quite fast growing (but not like Leylandii!).<\/li>\n<li>When mature, clip twice a year to keep in shape. It can\u2019t be hard pruned.<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/green-holly-hedge-plants-ilex-aquifolium\">Holly<\/a>: Evergreen. Very hardy. Shade tolerant.<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/holm-oak-hedge-plants-quercus-ilex\">Holm Oak<\/a>: Evergreen. Grows on the coast<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/hornbeam-hedging-plants-carpinus\">Hornbeam<\/a>: Not evergreen, but like the beeches, it holds its autumn foliage through the winter. Performs much better than beech in shady places &amp; will grow in quite damp clay soil that beech won\u2019t tolerate.<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/cherry-laurel-hedge-plants-prunus-laurocerasus-rotundifolia\">Laurel, Cherry<\/a>: Evergreen. The most common \u201cEnglish\u201d Laurel. Very shade tolerant, will do well in any well drained soil <strong>except<\/strong> shallow chalk.<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/portuguese-laurel-hedge-plants-prunus-lusitanica-angustifolia\">Laurel, Portugal<\/a>: Evergreen. The hardiest Laurel. Very shade tolerant, will do well in any well drained soil <strong>including<\/strong> chalk.<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/privet-hedging-plants-ligustrum\">Privet, Gold or Green<\/a>: Evergreen. Great value. The most popular city hedge plant \u2013 excellent for polluted areas. Grows well in poor soil &amp;<\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/yew-hedging-plants-taxus\">Yew<\/a>: Evergreen. Yew is the all time classic formal hedge. Grows well in any well drained soil &amp; shade tolerant.<br>Do not cut the leading stems of your yew plants until they reach the desired height of your hedge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<section
