{"id":611974512966,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:45","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/training-fruit-tree-wire-espalier-trellis-cordon-fan\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:41:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:41:24","slug":"training-fruit-tree-wire-espalier-trellis-cordon-fan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/gardening\/training-fruit-tree-wire-espalier-trellis-cordon-fan\/","title":{"rendered":"Building Wire Supports To Grow Fruit On Walls, Fences &amp; Posts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post concentrates on fruiting plants, but the same principles apply to an ornamental \u201cwall shrub\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>How to start training fruit trees on wires<\/h2>\n<p>These instructions apply to fixing wires to existing fences or walls for training <strong>maiden <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/collections\/fruit-trees\">fruit trees<\/a> into <strong>cordon<\/strong>, <strong>espalier<\/strong>, <strong>fan<\/strong>, and sometimes \u201cstep-over\u201d shapes.<br \/>Some nurseries sell some of those shapes in a starter form, lashed to a bamboo frame, for reasonables. <br \/>At Ashridge we stick to the core forms: Maidens you can train into anything, and starter Bushes and Half-Standards.<\/p>\n<p>When building rows of posts, ideally run them North-South, so that the \u201csides\u201d face East-West, getting sun on both sides throughout the day.<\/p>\n<h3>What are cordons, espaliers, and fans used for?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<strong>Cordons<\/strong> and <strong>espaliers<\/strong> are best for <strong>spur-fruiting apples &amp; pears<\/strong>; that\u2019s most varieties. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cordons give great value and flexibility to home fruit growers; espaliers are like a storeyed tier of cordons, therefore good for favourite varieties,<\/li>\n<li>Both forms are great subjects for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/fruit\/apple-tree-rootstock-grafting-videos\">grafting<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Both forms are better for a long-lasting framework of branches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Fans<\/strong> are best for <strong>all stone fruit<\/strong>, so cherries, plums, etc, for <strong>figs<\/strong>, and for relatively uncommon <strong>tip-bearing<\/strong> apples &amp; pears. Gets dry in summer, so mulching &amp; watering are important.<\/td>\n<td> All. Heat loving plants like Figs &amp; Kiwis require South facing walls.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>West Facing<\/th>\n<td> Afternoon Sun. Good rainfall.<\/td>\n<td> Cherries, Pears, Plums, Damsons, Gages, Apples, All Berry Bushes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>East Facing<\/th>\n<td> Morning Sun. Less rainfall &amp; colder than West facing.<\/td>\n<td> Cherries, Early Pears, Plums, Damsons, Gages, Apples, All Berry Bushes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>North Facing<\/th>\n<td> Least Sun \u2013 only certain plants will be able to make a decent crop.<\/td>\n<td> Morello Cherries, Damsons, Early &amp; Cooking Apples, Cordon Currants, Gooseberries, Blackberries<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<p>You will need 14 or 16 gauge galvanised fencing wire. <\/p>\n<p>14 gauge wire is necessary for rows of cordons and espaliers, the thinner 16 gauge wire is fine for fan-trained trees and soft fruit.<\/p>\n<p>The wire needs to be held away from the wall or fence, standing out by about 2-4 inches \/ 5-10cm. <br \/>You could use wooden battens, or angled metal angle brackets.<\/p>\n<h2>Wires Spacings for Different Fruit Tree Types<\/h2>\n<figure>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Fruit Tree Shape Pruned As:<\/th>\n<th>Wire Spacing<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Diagonal Cordons<\/th>\n<td>Every 2 feet \/ 60cm<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Fan Trained Trees<\/th>\n<td>Every 6 inches \/ 15cm. Start at 15 inches \/ 40cm above the ground.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Espaliers<\/th>\n<td>Every 15-18 inches \/ 40-45cm.
