{"id":611975528774,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:44","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/countryside-stewardship-hedge-grants-bn11\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T08:00:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T08:00:56","slug":"countryside-stewardship-hedge-grants-bn11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/countryside-stewardship-hedge-grants-bn11\/","title":{"rendered":"Countryside Stewardship Hedge Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><em>Last updated: July 2026<\/em><\/h2>\n<h2>BN11: Planting New Hedges<\/h2>\n<p>The most popular hedge related <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/countryside-stewardship-grants\" rel=\"noopener\">Countryside Stewardship Grant<\/a> for our customers is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.uk\/countryside-stewardship-grants\/planting-new-hedges-bn11\" rel=\"noopener\">BN11: Planting New Hedges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>How Much Money Can I Get?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The grant is currently \u00a322.97 per metre.<\/li>\n<li>Hedge plants start from under \u00a37 per metre if you buy our best value <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/mixed-bn11-bn7-countryside-stewardship-hedge-plants\">BN11 compliant hedge pack<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Planting accessories will be up to another \u00a37 per metre, depending on what you need.<\/li>\n<li>At under \u00a314 per metre, you have <strong>at least \u00a39 per metre <\/strong>to pay for planting, and <strong>from \u00a316 per metre with no accessories<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The accessories are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/bamboo-canes\">bamboo canes<\/a> for supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/spiral-plant-guards-plastic\">plastic spirals<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/weed-suppression-mulch-fabric-and-pegs-pack\">mypex weed suppression fabric with pegs<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/mypex-weed-control-mulch-fabric\">without pegs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If there is <strong>no risk of herbivore or rodent <\/strong>grazing, you <strong>won\u2019t need spirals &amp; canes<\/strong>, and it\u2019s better not to use them where they are unnecessary.<\/li>\n<li>Mypex fabric is <strong>almost always recommended for new rural hedges<\/strong> that aren\u2019t going to get much attention (unlike your garden hedge). However, you can do without it as long as you weed the hedge and water well in dry weather, especially on dry soils.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"klaviyo-form-QUGWUc\">\n<h3 class=\"text-text-100 mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" dir=\"auto\">When Can I Apply? (2026 Update)<\/h3>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"auto\">BN11 now sits under the wider <strong>Capital Grants 2026<\/strong> offer, and it&#8217;s due to reopen for applications in <strong>late July 2026<\/strong>. A few things worth knowing before you jump in:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"[li_&amp;]:mb-0 [li_&amp;]:mt-1 [li_&amp;]:gap-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc flex flex-col gap-1 pl-8 mb-3\" dir=\"auto\">\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Demand usually outstrips the budget.<\/strong> Last year plenty of applications got held up simply because the required evidence wasn&#8217;t ready to go with them \u2014 so it&#8217;s worth gathering your maps, historic records and photographs <em>before<\/em> the window opens, not after.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>You&#8217;ll need to be registered on the Rural Payments service<\/strong> to apply online. If you haven&#8217;t used it before, or your business details have changed, it&#8217;s worth logging in and checking everything&#8217;s up to date now rather than scrambling in a queue later.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>If your application is worth more than \u00a350,000<\/strong>, you&#8217;ll be asked for a letter from a qualified accountant confirming you have the funds to cover the work upfront (grants are paid after the work&#8217;s done and claimed, not before).<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Tenant farmers<\/strong> \u2014 if your tenancy doesn&#8217;t run for at least 5 years from the start of the agreement, you&#8217;ll need a landlord&#8217;s countersignature (a Land Ownership and Control Form).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Basic Requirements to Qualify for the Grant:<\/h3>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be a farmer with a field to qualify.<br \/>The new hedge must be on a site where you have \u201cmanagement control\u201d of both sides of the boundary, and one or more of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>there was a hedgerow in the past \u2013 as shown on historic maps or other records<\/li>\n<li>creation would extend or link existing lengths of hedgerow<\/li>\n<li>creation will help reduce soil erosion and run-off (which you can argue is anywhere there is soil and rain!)<\/li>\n<li>creation will help capture ammonia emissions from slurry or digestate stores, livestock housing or free-range areas for poultry or pigs<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/right-of-way-open-access-land\/use-your-right-to-roam\" rel=\"noopener\">access to open access land<\/a> is not obstructed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If grazing animals are in the field with the new hedge, it must be fenced off with at least 1.5m wide spacing for it to grow into when mature: set fencing at least 1.2m from the centre of the hedge, or, if there is a bank, as close to the base of the bank as possible<\/p>\n<h3>Requirements for Planting a BN11 Compliant Hedge:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>apply any herbicide to a 1.5m strip in the August or September prior to planting only<\/li>\n<li>carry out planting work between 1 November and 31 March (this is when bareroot plants are delivered)<\/li>\n<li>prepare the ground along a 1.5m wide strip to provide good soil conditions and as little competition from other vegetation as possible<\/li>\n<li>Plants must be:\n<ul>\n<li>2-year-old transplants at least 450mm to 600mm high (plant nurseries all write this as 40\/60cm, which is the smallest size that country hedging is delivered in)<\/li>\n<li>dominant native species (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/hawthorn-hedge-plants-crataegus-monogyna\">hawthorn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/blackthorn-sloe-hedge-plants-prunus-spinosa\">blackthorn<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/common-hazel-hedge-plants-corylus-avellana\">hazel<\/a>)<\/strong>, with no one species making up more than 70% of the total (so you need two species minimum, but could add as many as you like)<\/li>\n<li>planted in a staggered double row 40cm apart with a minimum of 6 plants per metre (see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/double-staggered-row-hedge-spacing-planting-distance\">double row hedge diagram<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>kept clear of weeds until they are established (this is so important: weeds can absolutely choke your new hedge)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>remove individual guards and tree shelters once the plants are established (they often fall apart by themselves in sunny conditions, especially if you choose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/products\/biodegradable-spiral-plant-guards\">bio-spirals<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>replace all failures in the following planting season (our bareroot hedging plants are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/pages\/bareroot-plant-guarantee\">guaranteed<\/a>, so we have got you covered)<\/li>\n<li>trim the newly planted hedge in at least the first 2 years to encourage bushy growth, allowing the hedge to become taller and wider at each cut (we recommend cutting at least 50% of the new growth, if not more)<\/li>\n<li>gap sizes of 20m or less don&#8217;t qualify for BN11<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Documents &amp; Records<\/h3>\n<p>To submit with your application:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>photographs of the completed work<\/li>\n<li>historic map or other records to show that the proposed location of the hedge planting either:\n<ul>\n<li>is on an original footprint,<\/li>\n<li>extends existing hedges,<\/li>\n<li>contributes to the reduction of soil erosion and run-off \u2013 this can be marked on any map including the Farm Environment Record (FER)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To keep and submit on request<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>consents or permissions<\/li>\n<li>the dates, locations and methods of weed control<\/li>\n<li>the dates of planting<\/li>\n<li>details of age, height and species planted<\/li>\n<li>photographs to show the planned location for each length of hedge planting<\/li>\n<li>receipted invoices, or bank statements where a receipted invoice is unavailable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"text-text-100 mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold\" dir=\"auto\">How to Apply<\/h3>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"auto\">Applications for BN11 are made through your <strong>Rural Payments Agency online account<\/strong>. In short:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"[li_&amp;]:mb-0 [li_&amp;]:mt-1 [li_&amp;]:gap-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-decimal flex flex-col gap-1 pl-8 mb-3\" dir=\"auto\">\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Sign in (or register) via the Rural Payments service.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Start a Capital Grants application and add the BN11 item.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Submit your supporting evidence \u2014 maps, historic records, photographs \u2014 ideally within 10 days of submitting the form, so your application doesn&#8217;t stall in review.<\/li>\n<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\">Once approved, you&#8217;ve got up to 3 years to complete the planting and claim.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"auto\">Can&#8217;t apply online?
