{"id":611975627078,"date":"2025-10-16T16:41:44","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/uncategorized\/trimming-country-hedges-frequency\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:40:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:40:56","slug":"trimming-country-hedges-frequency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/trimming-country-hedges-frequency\/","title":{"rendered":"Trimming Country Hedge Season &amp; Cycle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trimming a native country hedge out in the field is very different compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashridgetrees.co.uk\/blogs\/hedging\/trim-clip-prune-garden-hedge\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"13388\">clipping your garden hedges<\/a>.<\/p><p>Most country hedges are trimmed by a tractor mounted flail, something like this:<\/p><figure><div>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Compact Flail Hedgecutter on 26hp Captain Tractor\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/abXR8c3gJj0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>So it\u2019s no bother to trim on a <strong>two or three year cycle<\/strong>, which is cheaper, and much better for wildlife. <br>Several bird species simply won\u2019t hang around and nest in hedges that are trimmed yearly: they need the cover of long branches that arch up and out, forming a safe \u201ccage\u201d of stems where raptor birds can\u2019t snatch them.<\/p>\n<p>Grazing animals are often unofficial native hedge trimmers, which may be cause for a barbed wire fence. <br>The cover image below shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regenben.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Regenerative Farmer Ben<\/a> with a section of laid hedge that has been browsed clear at the base; towards the end of the video, they show how installing a little fence allows it all to regrow.<\/p>\n<figure><div>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"HEDGES AND EDGES - This is where the magic happens  \" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z2HkYekljXc\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><h4>When in the Year to Trim Hedges for Wildlife &amp; Birds<\/h4>\n<p>For wildlife overall, the perfect time to cut when the branches are bare of berries, well after the leaves have fallen. <br>For <strong>nesting birds<\/strong>, it\u2019s <strong>late February to September<\/strong> that matter; in most places it will only be pigeons nesting after August. Property owners can obtain a DEFRA license to control pigeons, but otherwise they still count as wild birds.<br>The official <strong>recommendations <\/strong>are not to cut hedges between March 1 and August 31, but the hedge trimming itself is never illegal, only the killing of birds or their eggs and nests:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAll wild bird species, their eggs and nests are protected by law. You must always try to avoid harming birds or to use measures which do not kill or injure them before considering taking harmful action.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><a
